“Ponds are disappearing. Henry David Thoreau's wondrous Waldon Pond is endangered. Ponds are marvelous gifs of nature, filling depressions gouged by retreating glaciers in the last ice age. For farmers they are reliable sources of water for livestock. Small boys skinny-dip and catch perch in them in summertime. Migrating waterfoul stop for refreshing baths and a cool drink. Trees and shrubs, reeds and cattails grow up around ponds. Birds nest nearby. Ponds attract thirsty night critters, especially racoons. In winter, ponds become silvery playgrounds for skaters, as you can see in this happy scene at Foxboro. We mustn't lose more ponds to housing developments, shopping malls and concrete condominiums. Such man-made folly will only make more work for Mother Nature when she decides it's time for another ice age.” (Published by Scott Arts Graphics)
